Music from a nation in turmoil. A hijacked rebellion now finds the rebels turning against their former Islamist allies as the latter try to ban music, culture, tolerance, fun, and other things that have always made Mali, Mali. For clearer and more detailed explanations of the conflict, see this.
This show celebrates the music of Malian musicians, particularly those from the North, currently the location of much of the strife. Musicians are among those calling for an end to the violence, as in the video “Voices United for Mali” spearheaded by Fatoumata Diawara. And we talked about the conditions in Mali with Aja Salvatore of Kanaga System Krush Records, who recently spent some time in the west African nation and is making a documentary on Malian musicians.
