Three birthdays of note this week: King Sunny Ade, Oliver Mtukudzi, and Lata Mangeshkar. Each achieved significant global success, and this week’s show features their music along with other artists who have influenced the path of popular global music.

Tibetan musician/activist Techung brought his band by the KAOS studios this week for a live performance and interview — you can find out more about his music and current tour at techung.com — big thanks to them for bringing such deep-spirited music to share! This show also featured a countdown of the Top 10 World Music Albums of August, from #10 Felix Lajko to #1 Oliver Mtukudzi. You can view the complete chart here.

East Bloc meets Zimbabwe? That’s kind of what this week’s show turned out to be, with music from Russia & its neighbors, along with an interview with the touring Oliver Mtukudzi, who’ll be here in Olympia on August 9. We talked a little about his tour and his new album Sarawoga (despite the poor phone connection). And we heard a few new releases in the last half-hour of the show. Have a great weekend!
